Standing firm against Daylight Saving Time
So you missed a TV show because you forgot the mainland switch to Daylight Saving Time. Take heart: At least you’re not living in Arizona.
Arizona, like Hawaii, eschews the whole DST business. That means it is in the same time zone as Denver during part of the year and synchronized with Los Angeles in the other.
Hawaii’s day length doesn’t change all that much from one season to the next, so our exception seems logical. But the reason Arizonans opted out of the time switch is the heat. Folks wanted sundown — and the evening cool-down — to begin as early as possible each evening.
But don’t forget, travelers: A part of Arizona — the Navajo Nation, extending over state lines — does observe DST. So if you’re in the Grand Canyon State, it’s probably best to avoid moving around too much at this time of the year, to avoid confusion as well as the heat.
