The National Weather Service extended a high-surf advisory until 6 a.m. today.
The east shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island will see 6- to 8-foot surf through this morning, forecasters say. Expect large breaking waves, rough conditions and life-threatening rip currents.
The HIC Pro surf tournament at Sunset Beach was suspended Tuesday because of election day, but it could resume today.
A small-craft advisory also is in effect, with winds of 29 mph and seas of 6 feet forecast for today.
The swell has led to a host of ocean emergencies, with lifeguards rescuing surfers Sunday on Oahu and Kauai.
A surfer in his mid-40s was taken in critical condition to a hospital Sunday afternoon after he got into trouble at Sandy Beach on Oahu.
A snorkeler noticed a surfer in trouble near the surf spot Full Point at 4 p.m. and notified lifeguards.
Lifeguards on a paddleboard pulled the surfer out of the water and performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took over treatment.
On Kauai, lifeguards rescued two people Sunday in separate incidents along the island’s North Shore.
At about 1:15 p.m. a 16-year-old North Shore boy jumped into the water near the edge of Queen’s Bath and was sucked out to sea. The boy waited outside the breakwater until lifeguards arrived and brought him to the Hanalei lifeguard tower. The boy sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment.
About a half-hour later a 32-year-old visitor from Wyoming was swept out to sea while wading between Haena Beach Park and Kee Beach. A lifeguard reached the woman using a personal watercraft and transported her to Tunnels Beach, where she was treated for minor injuries.
