Event to benefit stabbing victim
Supporters of Nicholas Iwamoto, the victim of a brutal stabbing on Koko Crater, are holding a fundraiser Thursday to help with his medical bills and college expenses.
The event, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Sure Shot Cafe, 1249 Wilder Ave. in Makiki, will include a silent auction, a raffle and light pupu. Iwamoto will be there as well.
Iwamoto was attacked Feb. 1, 2009, while hiking to the summit of Koko Crater. He was stabbed 18 times by Benjamin Davis, who then threw Iwamoto from the rim of the crater and into a ravine 30 feet below. Iwamoto broke his neck in the fall and fractured his skull.
Fill up a shoe box and share the spirit
Operation Christmas Child, which fills empty shoe boxes with donated toys, school supplies and necessities for needy children around the world, will open collection sites Tuesday through Nov. 19.
The local effort is hoping to collect 30,500 filled boxes.
Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, is the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, according to organizers.
A tracking program allows participants to "follow" their shoe box to the country in which their gift will be hand-delivered.
To register your shoe box gift, use the "Follow Your Box" form online at www.samaritanspurse.org.
