Pac-Five has something special to cheer about.

The Wolfpack scored 333 points to win the ILH cheerleading championships on Friday night at Kamehameha, taking down a dynasty in the process.

Pac-Five used a nearly flawless routine to beat Kamehameha by 13 points and Punahou by 37.5. All three schools will go to the state championships next Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena, with Kamehameha and Pac-Five in the large division and Punahou in the medium.

But for the first time, the Wolfpack will go to states as one of the teams to beat. Not bad for a program that draws girls from 10 different schools and has only been in existence for three years. Pac-Five was the runner-up in 2010 and third last year. Kamehameha had won every ILH title since the sport was instituted in 2000 and had never been beaten in an ILH competition until three weeks ago, when Pac-Five shocked them.

"We felt like once a champion always a champion," Pac-Five cheerleader Amber Schaefer said. "We knew (Kamehameha was) going to work hard. It was really scary. Our last practice was so bad. Everybody was falling and it was pretty dramatic and emotional, but we pulled it together and realized that if we got our confidence back we could accomplish a lot."

It was no shock on Friday night, though, as the Wolfpack hit the floor with the intensity of a team that knows it is the best in the gym. They nailed every flip and transitioned from each segment with confidence. Allurie Eliazar wasn’t sure if all of the parts fit together until the crowd let her know about halfway through.

"When we walked out onto the mat, I thought, ‘We’re not ready, we’re not ready,’" Eliazar said. "The scariest part of our routine was our pyramid, and once I heard the crowd screaming I was like ‘Yes, we hit it!’ It was such a good feeling.’"

Pac-Five left the crowd exhausted with the energy it gave out then had to wait for an hour for Kamehameha to perform.

"It was nerve-wracking," Tiana Wong of Pac-Five said about the wait. "We know that they always work it whenever they go out there. They are great champions."

Kamehameha looked like the team to beat when it hit the floor, the last varsity team to do so, but had a little wobble on one of its dismounts Still, it’s Kamehameha and Pac-Five coach Ipo Chang told curious bystanders that she thought the Warriors had done it again.

"I just knew we did well, but Kamehameha is tough," Chang said. "They are a good team. We just had to leave our hearts on the mat. Now we have to get back to practice."

Kamehameha is beginning to know a little bit about having everyone out to get it. The Warriors had their four-year run as state champs end last year when Radford rose up from the medium division to take the title. Now this. Still, the Warriors have won seven of nine state titles in the large division to go with two in the medium division the first two years of competition.

"Pac-Five definitely beat us," Kamehameha coach Melissa Beimes said. "They have amazing teamwork, skill and passion, and you can really tell that they enjoy what they are doing. It definitely was not our potential. We hope to have our potential next week."
