A Schofield Barracks soldier died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Friday, the Department of Defense said.
The announcement of the death of Spc. Daniel L. Carlson, 21, of Running Springs, Calif., came Sunday, Veterans Day.
The Army said Carlson’s death was not combat-related and is under investigation.
Carlson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, at Schofield’s Wheeler Army Airfield.
About 2,600 Hawaii soldiers with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade are in southern Afghanistan on a yearlong deployment that ends next month.
Carlson joined the Army in February 2010 and received basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He joined the aviation brigade in September 2010. This was his first deployment.
Carlson’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and an Aviator Badge.
He is survived by his parents and wife.
"Our sincere condolences go out to Daniel’s family and friends, and we share in mourning their loss," said Lt. Col. Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division. "This is a tremendous tragedy, and they remain in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."
