The Hawaii football team is expected to change its starting quarterback and suspend running back Will Gregory for an indefinite period.
Both announcements are expected to be made today.
Sean Schroeder, a fourth-year junior and Duke graduate, has started all nine UH games. But Schroeder also has been the leader of an offense that has struggled for yards, points and victories.
Chow has reviewed videos of UH’s 49-14 loss to Boise State three times. And while he was not ready to make a definitive announcement on Sunday night, Chow said: "I don’t know, but it probably will be (Jeremy) Higgins."
In a relief role the past two games, Higgins was a combined 15-for-22 for 210 yards. He led the Warriors on late scoring drives in each of those games. On Saturday, he also lost a fumble and was intercepted.
Of Higgins, a third-year sophomore, Chow said: "He moved around the pocket. He showed leadership."
Chow had endorsed Schroeder since the third day of training camp, when Schroeder was named UH’s No. 1 quarterback over Higgins and David Graves.
Chow said Schroeder "held on to the ball too long" against Boise State and "needs to make quicker decisions."
This year, Schroeder has been sacked 29 times. He has fumbled 12 times, losing possession eight times. One lost fumble was parlayed into an opponent’s touchdown. Four of Schroeder’s 10 interceptions were run back for touchdowns.
Schroeder was lifted in the third quarter against Boise. There were rousing cheers when Higgins entered, although the move coincided with the stadium announcement that a second UH touchdown would result in free food giveaway to fans.
Of the move, Chow said: "I felt it was time. I actually made up my mind to (substitute) the series before. And then I thought, ‘Naw, I need to give (Schroeder) one more series.’ I give him one more series, and he fumbled the ball. That’s so much for instincts."
If Higgins were promoted to No. 1, Schroeder still would be in contention for playing time.
Chow said that Graves, who missed a practice last week, "will not be part of the quarterback situation." Graves has practiced as a scout-team receiver the past few weeks.
Gregory was ejected in the first quarter after twice punching a Boise State player.
"That’s uncalled for," Chow said. "He hurt us."
Gregory is the Warriors’ speed back. He also was the off-set returner on kickoffs. After Mike Edwards scored on a 100-yard return, the Broncos tried to kick to the other side.
"They would have kicked it to (Gregory)," Chow said.
Indications are that Gregory will be suspended for at least this Friday’s road game against Air Force.
The Warriors will be down to three available running backs — Joey Iosefa, John Lister and Sterling Jackson. Receiver Chinedu Amadi also can be used as a running back.
