LAHAINA »North Carolina coach Roy Williams had something to say about Maryland’s move from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten in the 2014-15 season.
The 10-year Tar Heels coach weighed in — and then some — when asked about it after his ninth-ranked team’s 95-49 blowout win over Mississippi State.
"I was stunned. I was shocked by it. There is no question. I’m an old ACC guy," said Williams, who is a UNC alumnus.
UNC and Maryland were founding members of the ACC in 1953.
"Been around a long time. I’ve been around longer probably than the league has, I don’t know," Williams said. "So I was shocked by it. Didn’t see it coming whatsoever. I did remember after some meetings that we had … that the (exit) fine was going to be $50 million. It will be interesting to see what happens on that. If they’ve got that extra money, maybe they can pass it around to some other people."
Unbidden, the former Kansas coach went on, "It’s strange to me. But what’s going on in college athletics is strange to me. Give me a break, the Big East goes all the way to Hawaii, or close anyway."
Maryland had cited financial reasons for its departure.
"I’m one of those guys that if somebody doesn’t think my house is the right place to be, then go ahead and leave. I’ve got no problem with that," Williams said. "So for me, it was a shock. I hate to see them go, but they felt that’s what’s best for them, then see ya."
2014 Maui field released
The 2014 Maui Invitational field is set. Besides host Chaminade, Arizona, BYU, Kansas State, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Purdue and San Diego State will head to Lahaina, it was announced on Monday. Among them, Pittsburgh will be a first-time participant.
Next year’s visitors are Arkansas, Baylor, Cal, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota and Syracuse.
UNC fans dominate
North Carolina easily has the biggest showing among any fan group to travel to Maui this year. Over a thousand baby-blue-clad Tar Heels fans occupied the Lahaina Civic Center with alternating chants of "Tar!" "Heels!"
