Main break affects homes, businesses

Water service was partially restored in Wai­anae after a break Tuesday morning in a 16-inch water main on Farrington Highway near the Wai­anae Fire Station that forced the closure of a nearby school.

Initially, 400 businesses and homes were without water after the break occurred at 4 a.m. at 85-654 Farrington Highway. Fifty customers were without water by noon.

Affected customers could obtain water from a spigot on a fire hydrant at 85-332 Farrington Highway or at various water wagons placed at Wai­anae Boat Harbor; Hono­lulu Community Action Program Facility, 85-555 Farrington Highway; Wai­anae Fire Station; and at the end of Kaui­oka­lani Place.

The Department of Education reported there were no classes at Wai­anae Intermediate School.

Also closed was the Kamehameha Puu Kahea Preschool, which was to remain closed today.

The Board of Water Supply said repair work prompted the closure of both mauka lanes on Farrington Highway between Ala Hema Street and Kaula­waha Road. A contra-flow lane is in place to allow for traffic in each direction. Special-duty police officers and signboards are positioned near the break site to alert drivers of the lane closures.

Sirens to sound in 4 areas for testing

Hawaii Civil Defense officials will test sirens at Sandy Beach, Hanauma Bay, Wai­alae Beach Park and Mau­na­lani Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Residents might hear the sirens sound for 30 seconds. Technicians will use data from these tests to verify operational status and maintenance actions.

Hanalei Bay reopens after shark sightings

Kauai County Ocean Safety officials reopened Hana­­lei Bay to swimming Tuesday morning, after Monday’s closure due to shark sightings.

Lifeguards on Monday reported that two large sharks were seen roughly 100 feet from shore fronting a surf spot known as “Pine Trees.”

“No Swimming” signs were posted along the beach, and the public was advised to stay out of the water until further notice.
