Hawaii football coach Norm Chow might have figured a way to settle the three-quarterback competition among Sean Schroeder, Jeremy Higgins and Cayman Shutter.
"Maybe we’ll play all three," Chow said following Tuesday’s 90-minute practice. "Why not? What do we have to lose?"
The remark was half in jest, half as a reflection of an eight-game losing streak that dropped the Warriors to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the Mountain West Conference. The Warriors have two games remaining — Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday and South Alabama on Dec. 1.
Schroeder, who started the first nine games, re-entered the mix after being declared healthy on Tuesday. Schroeder suffered concussion-like symptoms when he was hit on the final UH play against Air Force on Friday. He had suffered similar symptoms twice prior to that game.
Schroeder passed the ImPACT, a neuro-cognitive assessment test, on Monday. He underwent a physical examination on Tuesday.
"I feel good," Schroeder said. "I’m symptom-free and good to go."
Higgins made his first collegiate start against Air Force, leading the Warriors to their first opening-drive touchdown of the season. Higgins struggled in the second half, ceding the position to Schroeder, who misfired on his five passes. The Warriors did not attain a first down in the second half.
Of not starting, Schroeder said: "It’s always tough when you’re not playing, but you have to respect the decisions the coaches make and support my teammates."
The three quarterbacks split the reps on Tuesday. Chow said each played well.
"The problem with having two or three guys is the (No. 1) guy doesn’t get enough reps," Chow said. "People don’t understand you have to see it over and over and over all the different looks and different coverages. People say ‘play this guy’ or ‘play that guy.’ It’s hard to do that."
Chow said he often recalls when he was the offensive coordinator at Southern California. Carson Palmer, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy, was the starting quarterback. Matt Cassel was the top backup.
"Matt Cassel had no reps (in practice) because Carson was a rep guy," Chow said. "But once (Palmer) got it, he was right on."
Chow said he believes Schroeder is a "rep guy."
"Different guys are built different ways," Chow said.
The depth is thinner at running back, with Joey Iosefa and Sterling Jackson sharing the work. Will Gregory is being held out of team drills for disciplinary reasons. John Lister, who is recovering from concussion-like symptoms, is on no-contact status for practice. Fullback Jared Leaf has been taking reps as a running back.
On the offensive line, there is yet another change. Kapua Sai will start at left guard ahead of Chauncy Winchester-Makainai.
The line has battled protection problems this season.
"We’re trying to simplify, simplify, simplify," Chow said of the blocking schemes. "They’re young. We just have to make it work."
