Ultraman event kicks off
The 30th Ultraman World Championship, a three-day, invitation-only event for 40 endurance triathletes, began this morning off Kailua-Kona Pier.
The international field includes Kailua-Kona residents Laurie Beers and Cory Foulk, and Tim Robert of Honolulu.
Stage I is a 6.2-mile (10K) ocean swim across Kailua Bay to Keauhou, followed by a 90-mile cross-country bike ride to Volcanoes National Park. The ride has a vertical climb of 7,600 feet, ending at Namakani Paio.
Saturday’s second stage is a 171.4-mile bike ride form Volcanoes National Park to Hawi starting at 6:30 a.m. The triathlon concludes Sunday with a 52.4-mile double marathon run with a 6 a.m. start from Hawi to Kailua-Kona, finishing at the Old Airport State Park.
Particpants must finish each stage within 12 hours or be disqualified.

Stock car event at raceway
Kalaeloa Raceway Park hosts its inaugural Stock Car Test N’ Tune Saturday.
Gates open at 10 a.m. General admission is $10 or $15, which includes a pit pass.

XTERRA championship Dec. 2
More than 2,000 runners are expected as the XTERRA Trail Runs Series concludes Dec. 2 with the 6th World Championship at Kualoa Ranch.
Courses include a 5K, a 10K and a 21K. The 21K runners are competing for a $10,000 cash purse with money going to the top seven men and top seven women.
The event caps the series, which included more than 70 off-road trail runs around the world. Registration is available online.

Tennis team second at nationals
A mixed doubles tennis team representing the USTA League Hawaii Section finished second at last week’s 6.0 Adult Mixed Doubles National Championships in Tucson, Ariz.
The Honolulu team, one of 17 in the field, won its round-robin flight and then defeated Edison, N.J., 3-0 to reach the finals. The team lost 3-0 to Caguas, Puerto Rico, in the final.
Jonathan Riel captained the team, which included Rika Uechi, Pamela Menchaca, Beth Choy, Janet Wang-Lee, William Graffigna and Jiahong Chen.
