Oregon’s Jillian Alleyne had 38 points and 27 rebounds in her last game before the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
Alleyne was nowhere near as effective against Kamilah Martin and Hawaii.
The 5-foot-11 Martin dominated the 6-3 Ducks freshman for long stretches of Friday night’s 85-73 UH win, going for 23 points and 14 rebounds to Alleyne’s 16 points and five boards before a crowd of 563 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (2-3), coming off lopsided losses to national powerhouses Baylor and Stanford, beat Oregon (0-3) and coach Paul Westhead at their own running game, putting up the program’s most points in five years.
Junior wing Vicky Tagalicod had a season-high 17 points in 17 minutes off the bench and redshirt freshman Ashleigh Karaitiana had her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
“We’re not even close to where we should be on all cylinders,” first-year coach Laura Beeman said.
“These guys knowing each other — who’s going backdoor, who’s going to pop, who’s going to roll — will improve.”
Up next is Arkansas (3-1) of the Southeastern Conference today at noon. The Razorbacks lost 73-70 to No. 13 Oklahoma in the first game.
Martin went right at Alleyne, who had set the Pac-12 rebounding record. UH finished with a 44-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Martin was typically humble about her evening, in which she scored on a series of high-low passes to the low post, finished by up-and-unders and quick ball fakes. She said she was aware of Alleyne’s big night in a loss to Portland State, but was not intimidated.
“We did good as a team, but there’s room for improvement,” Martin said after shooting 10-for-18. “Just with the posts, we’d seen the opportunity to go 1-on-1, so we just kept attacking that. It wouldn’t have worked without the 4 going to the 5 for the high-low. Credit to my teammates.”
Westhead was featured in the ESPN 30 for 30 film “The Guru of Go” for his up-tempo style at Loyola Marymount and in the NBA. But his women’s squad, playing the same shoot-fast, ball-pressing style, was unable to keep the pace. UH buried the game with a 14-2 run to go up 81-55, during which Martin had eight points.
Beeman was most impressed with her team’s ability to go against ball pressure after struggling with it in last week’s games. UH kept its turnovers contained, at 15, to 20 for Oregon.
“It has been a 180 from when Tennessee-Martin picked us up,” Beeman said. “Tonight we broke it with confidence. … That maturity in seven days is unbelievable to me.”
It was one of the best games of Tagalicod’s UH career after being slowed early this season by an ankle injury. She shot 5-for-8 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line.
“I took it upon myself to work hard, so I can prove, not only to myself, to my teammates and my coaches, that I’m the player that I was,” she said.
