Moniz is ASP women’s longboard champ
Hawaii’s Kelia Moniz won the Swatch Girls Pro China in Wanning on Sunday to claim her first Association of Surfing Professionals Women’s Longboard World Championship.
In a rematch of last year’s China final, Moniz posted a two-wave score of 16.05 to defeat Australia’s Chelsea Williams (9.50).
Moniz made the final after squeaking past Summer Romero 12.80 to 12.50 in the semifinals.
"I can’t believe how awesome it feels. I’m so thrilled to get the win," Moniz said. "Chelsea has been surfing really well all week. I knew I’d need to surf my best to beat her and I got lucky finding some really nice waves."
Ducks’ Mariota, Buckner receive awards
Saint Louis School alum Marcus Mariota was a co-recipient of the Oregon football team’s most outstanding player award, given out during the Ducks’ annual ceremony on Sunday in Eugene, Ore.
Punahou’s DeForest Buckner, a defensive lineman for the 11-1 Ducks, was also honored Sunday, receiving the Len Casanova Award as freshman or newcomer of the year.
Mariota shared the award, which was voted on by the players, with senior linebacker Michael Clay. The first freshman in 21 years to open the season as Oregon’s starting quarterback, Mariota led the Pac-12 in passing efficiency with a 165.36 rating, fifth-best nationally. He’s second in the conference with 30 touchdown passes and, with a bowl game left to play, has a completion percentage of 69.9, a mark that leads the NCAA freshman record of 69.5, set in 2007 by Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford.
Buckner, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound end, played a big role for the Ducks, working his way from third string to starter as injuries decimated the defensive line. He’s played in all 12 games, posting 27 tackles, including 21/2 for loss, and a sack.
