Christmas is on the air… every day of the week from now until the end of the year.
Star-Advertiser staffers shared their most beloved yuletide movies and TV specials last Friday in this space, sparking memories for many readers who gather round the warm glow of the television this time of year to watch for the umpteenth time such classics as "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "It’s a Wonderful Life."
I found a fellow fan of Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" — my favorite holiday entertainment in all its forms — at the State Capitol when Gov. Neil Abercrombie called to wax eloquent about his preferred version of the classic tale of redemption: George C. Scott’s 1984 Emmy-nominated TV movie in which the Oscar-winning actor plays Scrooge as a man embittered by his regrets "of the life he might have had."
"People forget that it’s a ghost story, and what happens is that it’s not Scott playing Scrooge as a crabby old tightwad, a tight-fisted, pinched-face guy who’s suddenly converted," Abercrombie said.
"For me he’s terribly lonely and alienated from himself … .
"Scott occupies the role. It’s not a stereotype. … And one of the forgotten people is David Warner playing Bob Cratchit. He really embodies the spirit of the story."
Get your jollies by watching the holiday gems listed here as the December countdown to Christmas starts Saturday. Check TV listings for times, which are subject to change.
