Motorcyclist dies in crash
A motorcyclist in his late 50s died Thursday in a crash in Pahoa.
A Hawaii County fire official said the accident involved a sport utility vehicle and the motorcycle at the intersection of Highway 130 and Leilani Avenue.
The motorcyclist died at the scene.
Police shut down the highway shortly after 5 p.m.
Traffic was being routed to the Leilani Avenue/Pohoiki Road intersection.
Apartment fire is ruled arson
Fire investigators have found that an apartment building fire in Waipahu on Wednesday night was intentionally set.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire originated in a second-floor apartment on Aniani Place. Investigators found that the fire began in a corner of a back bedroom with some clothing and a mattress.
The 6:04 p.m. fire caused an estimated $280,000 in damage at 94-232 Aniani Place.
The second-floor units were reportedly under repair and unoccupied, but three first-floor units were occupied and a strong smell of smoke left them uninhabitable. The local chapter of the Red Cross was helping the residents.
One woman was evaluated for smoke exposure.
