27th Annual Holiday Wreath Contest at Honolulu Hale
It’s a cockroach Christmas for one of the entries in the city’s 27th Annual Holiday Wreath Contest.
Mililani resident Json N created his entry, titled "Leftover Cookies," from an abundance of clay cockroaches enjoying some holiday treats. He crafted the bugs from pieces from his 2011 entry, "Cookies for Santa." Since his last creation was pretty, he said he decided to lean toward "creepy" this year. He said it’s a reminder that "forgotten leftovers are still being eaten."
The annual wreath contest, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts, often attracts bizarre and unique entries.
Garden hoses, bicycle inner tubes and safety cones are just a few of the materials that have been used in the past, according to Tory Laitila, registrar at the Office of Culture and the Arts.
This year’s wreath contest had the musical theme of "Kanikapila Kalikimaka!" Laitila said about 73 wreaths were submitted in the youth, adult and theme divisions and will be on display at Honolulu Hale along with trees decorated by various city departments.
