Hawaii residents’ bankruptcy filings dropped in November for the 21st consecutive monthly decline.
Data from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Hawaii, showed 211 new personal and business bankruptcy filings in November, down 12.8 percent from November last year.
Reflecting the state level decrease, the number of bankruptcy filings in each county also declined in November from the year-ago period.
The 128 filings in Honolulu represented a 7.2 percent dip; Hawaii County’s 29 cases are 17.1 percent lower; Maui’s 45 cases fell 18.2 percent; and Kauai’s nine cases are 35.7 percent below last November.
Two cases, initially filed under Chapter 13 bankruptcy reorganization, were converted to Chapter 7 liquidation cases during the month.
Four business bankruptcies were filed in November, two under Chapter 11 reorganization and two under liquidation statutes.
The 2,369 cases filed thus far in 2012 indicates the downward year-to-year trend in filings will continue, as 3,325 cases were filed in 2011 and 3,954 cases in 2010.
The high point of bankruptcy filings in recent years came with the 4,481 in 2005 before a late-year law change that made filing for bankruptcy more challenging.
