Kauai’s Sebastien Zietz secured the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title Sunday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pipeline Masters.
Zietz, who won the Reef Hawaiian Pro (the Triple Crown’s first event) and made the final of the Vans World Cup last week, earned $100,000, a $10,000 Nixon watch and a Harley Davidson motorcycle. No other surfer can pass him in the Triple Crown standings and now he has his eyes on the Pipe title.
"I feel amazing right now," Zietz said. "My goal was to qualify (for the ASP World Tour), but to win the Triple Crown is more like a dream."
In the fourth round, Zietz took out defending Triple Crown champion John John Florence in the pumping 6- to 8-foot surf at Pipeline.
"I am already stoked with what I have accomplished," Zietz added. "Andy Irons is the only other surfer to make all three finals and to put my name up there with that stat would be amazing. I think he is probably harnessing some energy for me to do it."
The contest is being held in memory of Irons, the three-time world champion who died two years ago and who also grew up on Kauai.
More drama awaits at the famous surf break. Two surfers are vying for the ASP World Tour title. Australia’s Joel Parkinson has a slight lead on 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, heading into the continuation of the event today, conditions permitting.
Parkinson looked dominant Sunday, posting heat totals of 18.10 and 16.17 and advancing to the quarterfinals.
Australia’s Mick Fanning, was in the running for the world title until Sunday, when he lost to Shane Dorian.
To take his 12th world title, Slater must overtake Parkinson in the event. He had an 18.63 heat for some incredible barrel rides.
"Once the title is on the line, I don’t need any more motivation," Slater said.
