Daniel Akaka was a champion for Native Hawaiians during his time in the U.S. Senate. He attempted to gain federal recognition for Native Hawaiians with the right to self-government, but the legislation failed in the Senate despite passing the House three times. Akaka greeted Pope Benedict XVI after the canonization of Father Damien at the Vatican on Oct. 11, 2009. Damien was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who cared for Hansen’s disease victims in Kalaupapa from 1873 to 1889.
