Robber returns to crime scene, is caught
A man suspected of robbing the Don Quijote store in Waipahu at gunpoint Monday tried to pull the same stickup two nights later but was foiled by a security guard, police said.
A 26-year-old Kaneohe man is in custody after a security guard recognized him as the man who pulled a handgun on him Monday night and left without paying for some merchandise.
Police said the robber returned to the store at 9 p.m. Wednesday and again tried to leave the store without paying for liquor.
When the security guard tried to stop him, the robber brandished a handgun as he had done Monday night, police said.
The robber fled in a black pickup truck that police said was stolen a week ago, but was found by a patrol unit a few blocks away.
The 26-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and several firearms and contempt charges. The driver of the stolen truck remained at large Thursday.
Autopsy awaited in swimmer’s death
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death of a 38-year-old Taiwanese tourist who died after being pulled from a pool at the Turtle Bay Resort on Wednesday.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Chia-Wen Liu.
Liu was taken by paramedics to a hospital at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
No foul play is suspected. However, homicide detectives have been given jurisdiction of the case until a ruling is made on the cause of death.
Soldier arrested on return from war zone
The U.S. Marshals Service says it arrested an Army soldier who had just returned to Hawaii from deployment overseas.
Shane Sanders, 37, was arrested without incident at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday at the passenger terminal at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
The marshals said Sanders was returning from a deployment to Afghanistan and was arrested on a warrant out of Henry County, Ga., for alleged child molestation.
The alleged incident occurred in 2005, but Deputy Marshal Donna Diaz said the allegations came to light only recently. The warrant was issued in October.
Sanders will face extradition to Georgia.
