‘Iolani scored the first basket against Dr. Phillips of Florida in Friday’s ‘Iolani Classic girls basketball semifinal.
But the nationally ranked Panthers from Florida didn’t trail for long.
Dr. Phillips responded with an 11-0 run to take control early, held off the Raiders the rest of the way in a 54-43 win and advanced to the tournament final.
"I thought our girls competed hard and played their hearts out. Dr. Phillips is a good team," ‘Iolani head coach Eddie Maruyama said. "This will help prepare us for the regular season."
PUNAHOU NAMES GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH
Courtney Robinson, who has an extensive mainland coaching background, has been named girls varsity basketball coach at Punahou.
Robinson coached at high schools in North Carolina and Pennsylvania and has served as women’s assistant basketball coach at Air Force and director of basketball operations at the University of Southern California.
She was an intermediate coach at Punahou.
"I’m excited to be coaching the talented varsity 1 team and look forward to working with the student-athletes to encourage their talents and their love of the game," Robinson said in a news release.
Robinson currently teaches health and physical education at Damien.

Dr. Phillips entered the tournament ranked 11th in the USA Today Super 25 and will face Oregon City in tonight’s championship game at 8.
‘Iolani takes on Southlake Carroll (Texas) in the third-place game at 6:30 p.m. Oregon City pulled away from Southlake Carroll 66-44 in Friday’s first semifinal.
Dr. Phillips guard Jade Cheek hit three 3-pointers in the first half on her way to a game-high 15 points. Hannah Schaible added 13 for the Panthers.
Abrianna Johnson-Edwards led ‘Iolani with 14 points, 12 coming in the second half. She spent most of the first half on the bench after picking up three fouls early in the game. Jade Botelho and Pua Kahalehoe contributed nine points each.
The Raiders took their lone lead of the night on a 3-pointer by Alex Masaquel 40 seconds into the game. But Cheek answered by hitting two from long range to trigger the 11-0 run for the Panthers.
Cheek drained her third 3-pointer of the first half with 53 seconds left in the second quarter and the Panthers took a 31-22 lead into the break.
Johnson-Edwards scored ‘Iolani’s first five points of the third quarter to bring the Raiders within six at 33-27. But a putback by Schaible and Sydnei McCaskill’s score off a steal pushed the lead back to double digits, and the Panthers’ size inside and pressure on defense stymied ‘Iolani’s attempts at a comeback.
Oregon City 66, Southlake (Texas) 44
Catelyn Preston scored 16 points, Johanna Paine 14 and Montana Walters 10 as the Pioneers slowly pulled away from the Lady Dragons.
Oregon City led 21-15 after one quarter, 36-27 at the half and 48-37 after three.
Southlake was led by Kennedy Leonard’s 13 points and Kami Mickens’ 12.
Maryknoll 54, Lahainaluna 48
Crystie Wong hit three 3-pointers and scored 18 points and the Spartans outscored the Lunas 24-9 in the fourth quarter to pull out a win.
Maegen Martin chipped in 14 for Maryknoll. Loke Basques led Lahainaluna with 11 points.
Jin Ling (China) 51, Moanalua 35
Suheng Tang scored 16 points to lead Jin Ling High School (China) over Na Menehune.
Lachae McColor scored 14 points for Moanalua, which trailed 33-14 at halftime.
ILH DIVISION II GIRLS
‘Iolani 36, La Pietra 24
Lauren Nikaido and Michelle Maitland led the Raiders over the Panthers with eight points apiece. Marissa Hoen led La Pietra with 10 points.
