Maui man is sentenced for failing to update sex offender status
A Maui man who failed to comply with the law for registering sex offenders has been sentenced to prison.
The Maui News reports that 40-year-old Rodney Herbert was sentenced earlier this month to five years in prison after failing to update information about where he was living. He did not return at least seven address verification forms. He also failed to show up for a court appearance.
Herbert was required to register as a sex offender because of a 1994 conviction in California for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under age 14. Because he was sentenced in October to a five-year prison term for second-degree theft, Herbert wasn’t eligible for probation.
He has been imprisoned for 18 of his 40 years, and was homeless when arrested in April.

Energy project on Maui draws slew of bidders
More than 100 bidders have expressed interest in Maui County call for a developer to build and operate a plant that could turn tons of daily waste into energy for the island.
Last month the county began seeking bids to convert the island’s solid waste into energy in an effort to cut down on the amount of trash that ends up in the central landfill in Puunene.
As of last week the Department of Environmental Management had received 111 prospective bidders, the Maui News reported Thursday. Bids include those from industry leaders Jacoby Energy, Zero Waste Energy, Novi Energy and Novo Energy. Also on the list are numerous companies or individuals listing Hawaii addresses.
Maui County officials have said the department would lease about 10 acres next to the landfill to the winning bidder, which would finance, design, build and operate the project.
Maui generates between 450 and 500 tons of waste a day. The county would make available all of its waste streams to the facility for 20 years. The deadline to submit bids has been extended to 4 p.m. Jan. 31.
