Alex Masaquel scored 12 points and Pua Kahalehoe added 11, including a crucial putback with 35 seconds to play, as No. 3 ‘Iolani edged No. 7 Punahou 41-36 on Tuesday night at the Raiders’ gym.
‘Iolani improved to 3-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (7-4 overall) with the victory over its arch rival. Punahou, which got 10 points from guard Astra Kidani, dropped to 2-3 in league play (7-4 overall) despite battling the Raiders evenly on the glass.
The Raiders limited Punahou to 1-for-12 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and 30 percent shooting from the field overall (13-for-43).
‘Iolani’s constant full-court pressure kept the visitors from establishing any kind of offensive flow, particularly with Turner Wong (six points, four assists) having an off night from the perimeter and post scorer Samantha Alakai still out with an ankle injury.
Jade Botelho added eight points, four boards and three blocks for ‘Iolani.
“It was a rough game, but as a team we knew what we had to do, which was stop their penetration,” Botelho said.
Freshman post Tyra Moe had seven points, seven boards and a block for Punahou.
“We practiced for their offense, but some of their things were new to us,” Moe said. “We’ve just got to work hard, get into the (league) tournament and do good.”
The Raiders, once a guard-dominant team with former all-state guards Kylie Maeda and Saphyre Rezentes, have adopted a new approach that puts Masaquel and Botelho’s mobility and finishing ability to work.
“Our new offense, we started learning it two weeks ago,” Botelho said. “Alex and I read the play and it gets us easy baskets inside and outside.”
Using those pick-and-rolls on the wing, with a multitude of slip-screen lobs, ‘Iolani shot 47 percent from the field (17-for-36). Assistant coach Rodney Veary was pleased.
“We’ve learned to attack differently. We started in November and this team has constantly overachieved. They’ve assumed the leadership roles,” he said.
‘Iolani platooned in the first half, using fresh legs and that fullcourt pressure to wear the Buffanblu guards down. Despite a torrent of turnovers in the second (six) and third quarters (five), Punahou rallied from a 36-25 deficit to make it a one-possession game. Kidani’s 3-pointer near the end of the third cut the lead to eight. She accounted for the next four points with a steal and feed to Hailey Motooka for a bucket, and then drove to the rim for a fast-break layup.
Then came a Punahou timeout, and when officials put the ball back in play, the Raiders were still in their huddle. That allowed Kidani to feed Keaupono Fey for an uncontested layup, and Punahou was within 37-34 with 40 seconds remaining.
“We didn’t hear the (officials’) warnings being called, so we were thrown back a little, but you’ve just got to move on,” Botelho said.
The Raiders made matters interesting by making just three of their 10 free-throw attempts in the final quarter. Klein Masutani was at the line with 37 ticks left for a 1-and-1 try when Kahalehoe rebounded her miss and scored to give ‘Iolani a five-point cushion, 39-34.
Kidani swished two foul shots with 24 seconds left to bring the Buffanblu within three, but Kahalehoe came through again, hitting two free throws with 23 seconds left.
Botelho then blocked a baseline shot by Wong to end Punahou’s threat.
“We can lose to anybody in the league. Punahou is just as good as anyone,” Veary said.
‘Iolani’s only shortcoming came at the charity stripe: 5-for-14.
It was another typical close, high-intensity battle between the two schools. ‘Iolani won twice last year, 38-35 and 59-58, before losing 51-38 in a late-season matchup that had no bearing on the final standings.
