Hilton, Hilo Hattie’s sell goods to celebrate Elvis’ ties to isles
Hilo Hattie’s pays tribute to "The King" with an Elvis Shop open at its Nimitz flagship store and the Hilton Hawaiian Village in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Presley’s "Aloha from Hawaii" 1973 concert. Presley often stayed at the Hilton while visiting the islands.
The Hilton temporary shop will be open through Tuesday on the ground floor of the Tapa Tower, across from the Tapa Bar. The Elvis store in Hilo Hattie’s, at 700 N. Nimitz Highway, will remain open all year long.
Elvis’ films "Blue Hawaii," "Girls! Girls! Girls!" and "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" were filmed in Hawaii, sparking sales of Hawaiian music and fashion at the time they were released in the 1960s.
The idea of Elvis in Hawaii influenced a new line of fashion apparel and fine jewelry manufactured in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. and distributed exclusively by Pomare Ltd., parent company of Hilo Hattie. Some items are available in limited quantities at other Hilo Hattie stores and at HiloHattie.com.
Additional celebration events:
» Friday: Book-signing with "Elvis in Hawaii" author Jerry Hopkins, 1 to 5 p.m. at the Nimitz store.
» Saturday: Concert promoter and longtime isle deejay Tom Moffatt will do a live radio broadcast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nimitz store. Moffatt played a major role in bringing Elvis to Hawaii for several appearances, including the original "Aloha from Hawaii" concert in 1973. The broadcast will be on KKOL, 107.9 Hawaii’s Kool Gold.
Hospice puts up $500 prize for benefit’s T-shirt design
Hospice Hawaii is seeking entries for a T-shirt design contest in advance of its fourth annual "Hot Pursuit" fundraising event April 20. The winning design will be printed on all event shirts and showcased on KHON2, and the winner will receive a $500 prize.
The contest is open to all ages. Entries must be submitted by uploading to www.hospicehawaii.org by midnight Feb. 25.
Contestants are challenged to create an original design that features the Hot Pursuit logo, Hospice Hawaii logo and event date (April 20, 2013). The design must fit within a 10-by-10-inch space, to be displayed on the front of the shirt, and can use no more than four spot colors. The winner will be notified by March 25.
During Hot Pursuit, teams raise funds leading up to the event, which is similar to the "Amazing Race." Like the show, teams solve a puzzle or complete a task at one location to get the clue for the next location. Prizes are awarded to the fastest teams and top fundraisers.
The funds will help Hospice Hawaii in its mission to support patients and their families.

BEAUTY SPOT
Clinic offers free screening for skin cancer
Kenner Dermatology Clinic will provide free skin cancer screening from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Castle Medical Center in Kailua.
Screening will take about 15 minutes. For appointments, call 263-3233.
Regular screenings can lead to early detection of skin cancer, which, when caught early, is nearly 100 percent curable.
With skin cancer rates increasing each year, Dr. Julie Kenner recommends wearing sunscreen and protective clothing. Aside from annual skin checks, people should see a dermatologist if they notice changing, growing or bleeding moles or skin lesions.
