Time for Hawaii creators of advertising and design to put forth their best work of 2012 for prize contention in the 2013 Pele Awards competition, and this year’s entry process is new, so hopeful entrants must pay careful attention.
One dasn’t be disqualified for entering in the wrong category or making some other such error.
It’s awards season for what may be just about every industry, with busy professionals just recovering from holidays and vacations also trying to hit the new year running, in addition to reviewing last year’s best work for award contention.
It’s a lot to handle, given the limited number of hours in each day.
Despite that, local film and video production house 1001 Stories LLC took the time to create an amusing, boxing-themed video promo for this year’s competition, which can be seen online at is.gd/2013PelePromo.
Pele Awards are the Hawaii Advertising Federation version of the American Advertising Federation ADDY award. The HAF is the District 13 chapter of the AAF, and because we’re unique we get to call our regional ADDY a Pele, after the volcano goddess.
All types of advertising and design work are considered, including print, broadcast, online, public service and something called out-of-home, such as ads displayed on directory kiosks in malls, for instance. On the mainland the category would include billboards.
All work must have been conceived and created within Hawaii and must first have appeared in the media in the previous calendar year to be considered. Production services outside of Hawaii may have been used to bring the project to fruition.
This year’s trio of mainland judges includes Roger Camp, principal and chief creative officer of Camp+King in San Francisco; Pum Lefebure, co-founder and creative director at Design Army in Washington, D.C.; and Craig Mangan, executive vice president and executive creative officer at the San Francisco offices of worldwide ad agency BBDO.
This year’s early deadline is noon Tuesday, after which entry fees go up by $10 in all but the student category.
The big Pele Awards gala will be April 27 in the Monarch Ballroom at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. All the night’s Pele winners also win automatic entry in the national 2013 ADDY competition.

Time for your close-up
Ad 2 Honolulu needs your teeth. Not literally, of course, but images of them, for their annual public service campaign on behalf of the dental clinic at Aloha Medical Mission.
The campaign is preparing for production and models are needed for television and print announcements.
"All types of teeth are welcome," said Brandon Gedeon, who is helping to lead the public service effort.
They really mean all types, belonging to males or females, especially "unique teeth," including teeth with braces, gold teeth, crooked teeth, teeth showing overbites or underbites, teeth with gaps and missing teeth.
Pictures must be submitted electronically, and models won’t be paid, but must be available Feb. 23 and 24.
Producers will need each submission sent to hello@neonrepublic.com to include the model’s full name, age, email address, phone number and, of course, a recent head shot showing teeth. The deadline is Jan. 23.
"TheBuzz" column on the selection of the dental clinic to receive the group’s annual pro bono advertising campaign drew the most feedback of any column last year. The clinic provides free dental services to those in need and was a little-known aspect of Aloha Medical Mission, which is one reason the nonprofit was chosen to receive the marketing campaign.
The number to call for information about the Aloha Medical Mission Dental Clinic is 847-3400.
