Hawaii County police are continuing to investigate whether the 37-year-old woman arrested in the stabbing death of a business owner is responsible for his death.
"She is still considered a suspect in the case, and we are still following up on leads," police Lt. Gregory Esteban said Thursday.
Lloyd Rubio, owner of Big Island Construction, was stabbed Monday morning with his children present in their house on Kaumana Drive in Hilo.
Police arrested the woman, Rubio’s live-in girlfriend, Monday.
Esteban did not disclose details of the murder scene, but said the woman was in the home at the time of the stabbing.
An autopsy revealed Rubio died of a stab wound to the abdomen and an injury to the aorta.
Police conferred with prosecutors, who declined to accept the case within the 48-hour deadline to file charges after an arrest. The suspect was released from custody Wednesday night.
Esteban said police are continuing to work closely with the prosecutor’s office and are continuing to investigate the case. Police are also awaiting results of additional forensic tests.
