Church of the Crossroads and St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church are inviting the public to free events Jan. 21 to honor civil rights champion the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Church of the Crossroads will recognize Kyle Kajihiro as the recipient of its 2012 Martin Luther King Award at 7 p.m. at the church, at 1212 University Ave., followed by a reception in Weaver Hall. Kajihiro served as program director for the American Friends Service Committee from 1996 to 2011 and has been an activist in Honolulu and Oregon in Hawaiian sovereignty, demilitarization and lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender issues, a church news release said.
Kajihiro is a board member for Hawaii Peace and Justice and Mana Maoli. He has written articles on power and its uses, including "Asian Settler Colonialism in Hawaii," "The Superferry Chronicles" and "The Bases of Empire," Crossroads said.
St. Elizabeth’s, in partnership with other Christian denominations, will host the second annual Ecumenical Service for King at 720 N. King St. It will begin at 6 p.m. with gospel music by the Faith and Praise Group of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and the Waiawa (Gospel) Choir.
The worship service at 6:30 p.m. will feature guest speaker W.C. "Phil" Phillips, a rehabilitation specialist, drug and alcohol counselor and activist. Mother Helen Harper of Saint Phillips Episcopal Church, Pastor Robert Nakata of Kahaluu Methodist Church, Kerry Grogan of Christ Church Uniting and others from a variety of denominations will participate. Refreshments will follow.
