When David meets Goliath, there’s no shortage of heroic moments for the little guy.
This time, though, Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway’s "little guys" couldn’t stop the giants. Tyler Liana and Jacob McEnroe powered their way to a combined 24 points and 24 rebounds, while Van Hugo scored 20 points to lead Farrington to a 70-59 win over Roosevelt.
"I’m proud of the way my little guys battled," Hathaway said. "I can’t ask for anything more. Farrington is probably one of the best teams in the OIA. Our game plan was to pack it in like we did in preseason. They didn’t hit an outside shot in that game. But that guy (Hugo) hurt us this time."
Roosevelt’s lineup doesn’t have a player taller than 5 feet 9, but their fullcourt pressure and fast break kept the Govs racing up and down the floor.
"Their guards are so tough. If they ever get a big man, the whole state is in trouble," Farrington coach Allan Silva said of the Rough Riders. "We were fortunate. Tyler finishes really strong, but Roosevelt is very competitive. They have some of the best guards in the state, they’re so quick."
Mason Semisi, a 6-5 junior, scored 10 of his 11 points in the second quarter for Farrington, which improved to 4-0 in OIA East play (7-8 overall), thanks to a pivotal third quarter. Farrington led 34-29 at the break before going on a 10-2 run to open the second half. Hugo, a 5-foot-10 junior, nailed two of his four 3-pointers during the run.
Point guard Isaiah Smith committed his fourth foul with 4:23 left in the third quarter after the visitors opened a 44-31 lead.
The Govs remained hot, however, and after Liana hustled for a follow shot — he had 13 points and 13 rebounds, including six offensive boards — Farrington led 53-33.
Roosevelt closed the gap, sparked by Valen Inaura, who led the Rough Riders with 16 points. They got within 55-45 early in the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by reserve Justin Furtado, but Farrington settled down with Smith back on the floor. The Govs got the lead back up to 15 after Smith hit Liana on an inbounds lob pass.
But Smith fouled out with 3:12 remaining, and the Rough Riders had already cut the margin down to nine points. After J.J. Acopan swished a trey, Roosevelt was within 65-57 with 59 seconds left. With Farrington missing 1-and-1 free throws, the Rough Riders cut the lead to 66-59 on a layup by Furtado.
But Hugo swished two foul shots with 36 ticks left and Roosevelt went cold the rest of the way. Roosevelt shot 2-for-9 from the 3-point arc in the final quarter and 3-for-15 from deep for the game.
McEnroe, who finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, closed it out with a dunk on the game’s final play.
Roosevelt fell to 2-2 in league play (5-6 overall). Isaiah Visoria added 10 points and four rebounds.
Farrington also got eight points off the bench from backup point guard Mark Dudalao.
The Govs dominated the boards 44-22, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds. But the Govs also turned the ball over 21 times to Roosevelt’s 12.
