Makapuu hiker injured in fall near lighthouse

A 27-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after he apparently fell 30 to 40 feet while hiking near the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. near the Hawaii Kai side of the lighthouse, a supervisor for the city Division of Emergency Services said.

The victim, who apparently is in the military and stationed here, climbed to an area outside the actual trail above the lighthouse, lost his footing and fell, said Capt. James Todd of the Honolulu Fire Department.
