Pupukea boxer wins at national event
Keoni Adric Jr. won the 132-pound weight division at the USA Boxing Junior World Team Open on Friday in Reno, Nev.
The 15-year-old from Pupukea took home the gold medal by defeating Jose Guevara of Phoenix 35-26 in the championship round of the lightweight division.
With his win, Adric earned the opportunity to represent the U.S. this summer in the AIBA Junior Men’s World Championships in Kiev, Ukraine.
UH track team kicks off 2013 season
Two school records fell as the University of Hawaii women’s indoor track and field team made its 2013 debut at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday in Seattle.
Ashley Satterwhite broke the UH record in the 60-meter dash twice — first in the prelims (7.83 seconds) and then in the final (7.79). She placed ninth overall.
Meanwhile, Melody Papalii set a school record in the 600, placing 10th with a time of 1:38.17.
The top finishers for the Rainbow Wahine included Amanda Alvarez, Samantha Balenstine and Charlinda Ioane. Alvarez was runner-up in the triple jump with an opening leap of 38 feet, 9 inches, Balenstine placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.75, and Ioane was third in the shot put with a throw of 45-1.75.
Wade to speak at Quarterback Club
University of Hawaii men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade will be the guest speaker at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon on Monday at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. The luncheon cost is $15 per person. The general public is invited to attend.
