Lilia Maio sprinted her way to 14 points as No. 1 Kamehameha used a dominant third quarter to rout No. 3 ‘Iolani 64-44 on Saturday at the Raiders’ gym.
Kamehameha (10-0) improved to 6-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, using tough man-to-man defense and a well-read scouting report to stymie ‘Iolani’s new pick-and-roll heavy offense. The Raiders (7-5) fell to 3-2 in league play.
The visiting team in navy blue was simply outstanding, befitting its new No. 1 ranking this week in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 poll.
"We thought they’d come hard," said 6-foot-1 Alohi Robins-Hardy, who had nine points and five rebounds. She took a rough fall and landed on her lower back in the third quarter, but returned in the fourth.
"We believe, and that’s all that matters," she added.
The Warriors beat the Raiders for the second time in regular-season play with a balanced attack. Guard Tiare Kanoa scored 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter. Shantel Aleki, a sophomore post, scored eight points off the bench and senior Puuwainui Ah Puck also provided a spark in relief. The Warriors ran the floor all night, fast-breaking for easy buckets, including some by Aleki and Ah Puck.

That pace, plus some deft passes — Kanoa led with five assists — helped the Warriors get high-percentage looks. They shot 57 percent from the floor (25-for-44), getting assists on 16 of those buckets, and forced the normally sure-handed Raiders into 20 turnovers. At times, especially in the third quarter, the Raiders looked completely flustered.
Kamehameha, meanwhile, never lost its edge.
"It’s happened to us against Punahou and Maryknoll. They came back on us after we lost some intensity," coach Darold Imanaka said.
It didn’t happen this time. Imanaka credited his staff, including assistant coach Kevin Velasco, who scouted ‘Iolani earlier in the week.
Coming off a win over Mid-Pacific on Wednesday, the Warriors arrived in hyper-speed mode. They raced to a 14-4 lead and maintained the lead at 30-20 going into the half. By then, ‘Iolani had 15 turnovers.
But the Warriors were a bit sloppy as well, with 13 giveaways, and the Raiders pulled within 30-25 early in the third quarter on free throws by Alex Masaquel.
From there, Kamehameha went on a 22-4 run that silenced the home crowd. Kanoa, who was scoreless in the first half, hit two 3-pointers in the quarter as the visitors shot 8-for-13 from the field. Kanoa’s trey from the left wing at the buzzer opened the lead to 52-29 entering the fourth quarter.
Kamehameha’s biggest lead was 29 points.
It was bittersweet for senior Brachelle Nueku, who watched from the bench with a brace on her left knee. Nueku injured the knee last week against Maryknoll.
"It’s hard to watch everyone else play, but I cheer for them, encourage them," the point guard said. "I’m hoping until states come. If I can’t walk on it, I’ll probably be out."
The Raiders shot 35 percent from the field (17-for-48) and took a relatively low eight 3-point shots, making three. They were 7-for-16 from the foul line.
Because of finals week, ‘Iolani didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday. Masaquel suggested that there could’ve been a little bit of prep time.
"They (the school) won’t allow practice. We got out at 12 noon during finals, so we have 12 hours," said Masaquel, who led ‘Iolani with 10 points and five rebounds.
She was as rusty as any of the Raiders, shooting 4-for-15 from the field. She missed her first eight shots.
"Kamehameha scouted us well. They jumped our pick and roll and didn’t switch. Our second group ran our offense better than we did," she said. "We didn’t play as a team. Their transition really affected us today. We’re all kind of dead. We’re drained, but that shouldn’t be an excuse."
Abrianna Johnson-Edwards added eight points and Jade Botelho had seven points plus three steals.
The battle for a state-tourney berth is still ahead.
"There’s still hope," Masaquel added. "There’s still the playoffs."
