NOTEBOOK
Kapolei makes Elite Top 50
The Kapolei boys soccer team is ranked No. 46 in the Elite Soccer Report Top 50 national rankings.
The Hurricanes (8-0-1) are tied with Mililani for first place in the OIA West.
Five to play in Poly Bowl
Five Hawaii high school football players have been selected to play in the Under Armour All-American/All-Polynesian Bowl in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The five are quarterback Keelan Ewaliko of Baldwin, defensive back Kawehena Johnson and running back Aofaga Wily of Kahuku, cornerback Shaun Kagawa of Kamehameha-Hawaii and defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimaseali‘i of Waianae.
All were selected by the AIGA Foundation and will be coached by present and former NFL players, including former Farrington, UH and San Francisco 49ers lineman Jesse Sapolu.
"I know for my son and Aofaga, they’re looking forward to it," Kahuku football assistant coach Darren Johnson said. "You look at the rosters and there are a lot of darned good players. Already, Polynesians are physical kids."
All five were Star-Advertiser All-State first-team selections, with Johnson (defense) and Wily (offense) voted to top honors.
Johnson, who is recovering from an ankle injury, will miss basketball games this week against Castle and Farrington, according to his father, who is Kahuku’s head boys basketball coach.
Kahuku football honored again
The National Sports News Service has ranked Kahuku at No. 28 nationally in its season-ending football Top 50 rankings.
Writer Mark Tennis wrote: "A 42-20 win over Punahou gave the Red Raiders their second straight state title and a dominating unbeaten season in a state that is generally underrated by most national rankings analysts."
