Kamehameha junior Weli Alamillo scored on a free kick with about a minute left and the Warriors (4-2-1) salvaged a 1-1 tie with ‘Iolani (4-0-3) to stay in the ILH chase.
“If we had lost, it would have been huge because we need every point we can get,” Kamehameha coach Jorge Barbosa said. “This point was huge. Obviously a win would have been even better, but we know what a quality team (‘Iolani) is. We fell behind, but the boys never gave up.”
‘Iolani took the lead when freshman Keoni Makekau scored on a header off a cross from Spencer Ho with about 15 minutes left. Kamehameha got the equalizer when Alamillo’s kick bounced past the ‘Iolani goalkeeper and into the net.
“It was a last opportunity and we caught a break,” Barbosa said. “We definitely caught a break.”
