They could start calling Nick Velasquez “Mr. 3-D” for two good reasons.
Velasquez poured in 22 points and limited Makoa Camanse-Stevens to 14 as No. 2 Punahou overpowered No. 5 Kamehameha 61-45 on Saturday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Punahou (15-4) improved to 4-1 in ILH play, winning its third game in a row since a close loss at Maryknoll. Velasquez hit four treys and continues to be a big factor for the Buffanblu, who got 10 points and six assists from Jordan Tanuvasa, and 10 points and seven rebounds by Kupono Fey.
“Makoa’s a heck of a player. We gave that challenge to Nick,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said.
While Velasquez bodied up on the 6-foot-4 Camanse-Stevens, the Buffanblu were stout in the paint. Daniel Andrews (eight points, two blocks), a 6-7 junior, teamed with the 6-6 volleyball standout, Fey, to make life tough for the Warriors inside.
Kamehameha’s dribble-drive offense created a fair share of quality shots from the elbow areas — the Warriors shot 55 percent from the field (16-for-29) — but turned the ball over 18 times.
“We’re trying to get better in our halfcourt defense, to be more disciplined,” Matsuda said. “Kamehameha is very quick, very athletic. They’ve got guys who like to take you off the dribble.”
The Warriors (11-8, 2-3) dropped their third straight in league play after winning the first two.
“That was a rough one,” Kamehameha coach Julian Nakanishi said. “Everything we schemed for, they made it hard for us.”
Camanse-Stevens took just seven field-goal attempts under Velasquez’s blanket defense.
“Nick is a good defender. We’ve got to find other ways to get Makoa going,” Nakanishi said, noting that Camanse-Stevens has racked up heavy minutes as a key ballhandler, defender and scorer.
Velasquez hit a pair of treys and Tanuvasa hit one as the home team jumped to a 9-0 lead and never looked back. The Warriors got within 19-13 on consecutive buckets by Camanse-Stevens, but Punahou closed out the first half with an off-balance baseline jumper for a three-point play by Dayson Watanabe, a three-point play by Micah Ma‘a and a buzzer-beating 15-foot jumper by Tanuvasa.
The Buffanblu led 27-13 at intermission. They put it out of reach with a 16-7 run to begin the second half.
Velasquez, who shot 8-for-11 from the field, enjoyed both ends of the floor.
“I love the challenge. Makoa is the best player they’ve got,” he said. “I wanted to shut him down to the lowest points possible. They run the offense through him and we were prepared.”
