High surf warned for north, west shores
A powerful new northwest swell is expected to bring large, dangerous surf to the north and west shores of most islands through today.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service on Monday issued a high-surf warning for the north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau; the north shores of Maui; and the west shores of Hawaii island. The warning is in effect through 6 p.m.
Waves along north shores were expected to reach 20 to 30 feet Monday night, while west shores could see waves of 15 to 20 feet, forecasters say. City Department of Emergency Management officials warn only highly experienced individuals should enter the water in affected areas.
8 people rescued from Pearlridge monorail
Honolulu firefighters rescued eight people trapped for nearly two hours in a monorail car more than 30 feet above the ground at Pearlridge Center on Monday night.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig, the car stopped on the suspended rail system just short of the Ross Dress for Less store due to a mechanical failure. Trapped inside the car were one adult male, three adult females and four children.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m.

Lineman’s Rodeo to highlight skill in electric work
Makaeo Beach Park will host the first Hawaii Lineman’s Rodeo on Feb. 23, Hawaii County officials said.
More than 40 mainland and local teams of electric utility professionals and contractors are expected to compete. The rodeo highlights safety, skill and education in overhead electric work.
Hawaiian Electric Co., which includes Hawaii Electric Light Co., and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1260 are sponsoring the event.
The event will support Toys For Tots and the Hawai‘i Food Basket. Vendor applications to participate in the free community fair are being taken at www.hawaiilinemanrodeo.com.
County report on wastewater filed with EPA
The Maui County Department of Environmental Management says a quarterly report was filed this month in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Health’s consent decree to prevent or minimize Maui wastewater spills.
The county agreed in the past to a consent decree requiring reports on efforts taken to prevent the spills.
Quarterly Report No. 54 and previous reports are available for public inspection and copying at the Department of Environmental Management, Wastewater Reclamation Division office, 2200 Main St., Suite 610, Wailuku. The report is also available on the Maui County website at www.mauicounty.gov/ wastewater.
