The Mountain West Conference’s recent expansion and Tuesday’s announcement of a championship game have the University of Hawaii scrambling with its schedule.
That’s because the conference has chosen Dec. 7 as the date of its first title game matching West and Mountain division winners, the same date Brigham Young is scheduled to play at Aloha Stadium.
By expanding to 12 teams last week with the return of San Diego State, the conference qualified to hold a championship game.
UH athletic director Ben Jay said, "I will have to talk to them (BYU)" about another date.
A BYU spokesman said, "We are obviously aware of the MWC changes that were announced (Tuesday). Our 2013 football schedule is still a work in progress, so we’re not in a position to discuss specific dates."
Because UH and BYU signed their multi-game contract in May 2011, amid conference upheaval and realignment, there is also a clause stating, "each party agrees to work in good faith with the other party to change the date of a contest to another date or another week to accommodate the other party’s scheduling and broadcasting requirements, including scheduling commitments required of UH by its conference, as necessary."
BYU, which is an independent, has yet to announce its 2013 schedule, but FBSschedules.com lists the Cougars with openings for Sept., 14, Sept. 28, Nov. 2 and Nov. 30. UH has Army on Nov. 30 and the other dates are on hold pending assignments by the Mountain West. Commissioner Craig Thompson has said he expects to have a final conference schedule in April.
The MWC said each school will play five games against teams in its division and three against cross-division opponents.
Joining the Warriors in the West will be Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and Nevada-Las Vegas. The Mountain Division will be composed of Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming.
