Another body found in search for man
Hawaii County police discovered a body Tuesday morning off Stainback Highway in Hilo near where they found a set of badly decomposed remains Friday while searching for Dante Peter Gilman, 44, of Hawaiian Acres, believed to have been the victim of a homicide.
Prosecutors have charged two cousins, Claude Keone Krause, 30, of Puna and Kawena Krause, 19, of Kurtistown, with Gilman’s murder.
Detectives and a scent-discriminating dog conducted checks in the area after receiving an anonymous tip Tuesday of a body off "Tree Planting Road."
Police Lt. Greg Esteban said the bodies were found two miles apart in a remote area off Stainback Highway. He said both bodies were badly decomposed.
On Friday, police were conducting searches for Gilman’s body when they found a badly decomposed body off the ATV Trail Park off Stainback Highway. An autopsy was performed on those remains, but detectives are awaiting more examination and toxicology reports "due to the advanced state of decomposition," before releasing the cause of death, police said.
Guardsman in custody after surfacing
A Coast Guardsman who disappeared more than three months ago and showed up at his wife’s home during the weekend was in military custody at Pearl Harbor on Wednesday after being released from the hospital.
When Petty Officer 1st Class Russell Matthews disappeared in October, he was being discharged from the Coast Guard for illegal use of marijuana, Coast Guard spokesman Chief Warrant Officer Gene Maestas said. He hasn’t been arrested. But Maestas said Matthews’ unauthorized absence for three months and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance make him a flight risk.
