Canny Aikau scored 13 points and came up with the defensive play of the game, stripping the ball from Roosevelt’s Devyn Kauhi with a second to play as Kaimuki upset No. 4 Roosevelt 47-44 on Wednesday night.
Kaimuki, which was 6-5 in the OIA East regular season, is now in the Red Conference semifinals and will play Leilehua on Saturday at Waipahu’s gym.
“We wanted to shock everybody,” said Aikau, who added five assists and five steals. “Coach Mona (Fa‘asoa) told us she’s got texts saying, ‘Shock the world.’ She gave us a speech and she motivated everyone.”
It was a far cry from a league-opening 54-33 loss to Roosevelt on Dec. 5.
“We had to spread the court. Roosevelt likes to double from behind and we had to prevent that,” Fa‘asoa said.
Roosevelt’s league title hopes dissipated on a night when point guard Starr Rivera (elbow) did not suit up. The Rough Riders (12-3 overall), who had won all 11 of their regular-season games, will host Kahuku in a consolation matchup on Friday. The winner will secure one of the OIA’s six state-tournament berths and the loser will be done for the season.
A stunned audience at Roosevelt’s gym saw a gritty effort by Kaimuki, which suited up eight players, including two with injuries. Swingman Princess Lauvao, playing out the season with a chip fracture in her foot, also scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds and five steals. Reserve guard Nikki Vongprachanh played on an ankle injury suffered in an opening-round win over Kapolei on Tuesday.
“I feel awesome, man. I got scared, but I have faith in my team,” said Lauvao, the OIA’s leading scorer. “All us seniors asked each other if we really wanted to beat them. We all agreed to push even harder.”
Aikau was an ironman again. She was on pace to play all 32 minutes for a second night in a row, but suffered cramps in both legs with 5:43 remaining with the score tied at 40.
Ally Pologa, who scored a game-high 14 points, then hit a clutch 3-pointer from the right corner to give Kaimuki the lead for good with 5:22 left.
Lauvao had already sat a significant amount of minutes with foul trouble, but after returning, she rolled her left ankle with 4:43 to go.
Lauvao tightened her shoelaces and gutted it out. Aikau returned with 4:36 left.
“I wanted to come in. I couldn’t let my team down,” said Aikau, a senior point guard.
Kauhi, who led Roosevelt with 12 points, hustled for a steal and a layup, but Lauvao answered with two free throws for a 45-42 Kaimuki lead with 1:58 remaining.
Roosevelt senior Chelsea Wong hit a putback to bring the home team within 45-44 with 1:33 to go, but three turnovers in the final 40 seconds derailed the Rough Riders.

ILH DIVISION I BOYS
No. 1 Maryknoll 15, No. 4 ‘Iolani 13
Kaleb Gilmore hit an 8-foot runner with 24 seconds left to give the Spartans the lead, and Zach Buscher’s 3-point shot for the Raiders missed at the buzzer as top-ranked Maryknoll remained unbeaten in league play with a low-scoring victory over the fourth-ranked Raiders.
“Buscher’s man played him high, so he went backdoor (to the right wing),” ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. “He gave him a pump fake and got a clean look. It was on line, just a little long.”
The Raiders’ strategy from the start was to minimize possessions and it nearly worked. The game was scoreless after one quarter, and Maryknoll had a 2-0 lead at halftime.
“The first time we played them, we lost by 18,” Shimamoto said of a 61-43 loss on Jan. 5. “This time we had a shot to win it at the end of the game. If we try to run with them, we’ve got no chance.”
Maryknoll’s transition game was not a factor after Josh Burnett picked up his second foul midway through the first quarter. That allowed ‘Iolani to run the clock while the home team sat back.
“When I saw them come out with five guards, their fastest, smartest kids, I thought they would trap us,” Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. “But it was a stall.”
