Strickland outstanding boxer at regional
Daniel Strickland was named the outstanding boxer at last weekend’s Hawaii State/Regional Open Championships at Palolo Gym.
Strickland, fighting out of Palolo Boxing Club, defeated Kawano Boxing Club’s Gaylor Balasi at 165 pounds.
Other champions were: Paul Leblanc, unattached, 108 pounds; Kalai McShane, Kawano BC, 123 pounds; Keoni Britton, Pearlside BC, 152 pounds; and Jacob Lopes, Palolo BC, 178.
The five advance to the USA Boxing National Championships, March 30-April 6, in Spokane, Wash.
Also competing for Team Hawaii at the nationals will be eight boxers who were unopposed last weekend, including Lisa Ha, ranked No. 2 nationally at 119. Also moving on are: Haley Pasion, Kawano BC, 125; Gardenia Sims, Kawano BC, 178; Jaybrio Pebenito, Old School BC, 114; John Yoshikawa, Southside Maui BC, 132; John Asi, unattached, 201; and Lawrence Olive, Pearlside BC, 201-over.
Free racquetball clinic, exhibition on Tuesday
Charlie Pratt, ranked No. 11 on the International Racquetball Tour, will hold a free clinic and exhibition Tuesday at The Honolulu Club.
Pratt will discuss stroke mechanics, footwork, practice drills, playing doubles and stretching. An exhibition singles match will follow.
Participants should bring racquetball gear. The clinic begins at 6:30 p.m.
