All patrol districts of the Honolulu Police Department are now reporting to a single assistant chief following a reorganization that was approved by Police Chief Louis Kealoha.
The changes, which took effect Jan. 1, follow the retirement of Assistant Chief Bart Huber, who left at the end of 2012 after 29 years on the force, HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said.
All eight patrol districts now report to Assistant Chief Randy Macadangdang.
"It is anticipated this will promote effectiveness, efficiency and consistency among all patrol districts throughout the island," Yu said in a written statement.
Since 1988, responsibility over patrol districts was split between two assistant chiefs, with one in charge of a geographical area that consisted of nearly all Honolulu and the other overseeing the rest of Oahu. Most recently, Macadangdang had been in charge of the Central Patrol Bureau, and Assistant Chief Clayton Kau oversaw the Regional Patrol Bureau.
Kau is now in charge of the Support Services Bureau, previously headed by Huber. The other assistant chiefs are Mark Nakagawa (Administrative Bureau), Greg Lefcourt (Special Field Operations Bureau) and Susan Dowsett (Investigative Bureau).
With the consolidation, Kealoha has chosen to not fill the sixth assistant chief position, at least for now, Yu said.
The five assistant chiefs report to two deputy chiefs who report directly to Kealoha. The administrative and support services bureaus answer to Deputy Chief Dave Kajihiro, while the patrol, special field operations and investigative bureaus fall under Deputy Chief Marie McCauley.
HPD is expected to announce other promotions next month.
