A key position for the Hawaii football team continues to get deeper and taller.
Wide receiver Ammon Barker of Alta High in Sandy, Utah, told the Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
Barker is 6 feet 4 and 205 pounds.
He is the sixth receiver in this recruiting class. Each is at least 6 feet, and four are 6-3 or taller.
"I committed to Hawaii," Barker said. ‘I’m waiting for signing day (on Feb. 6) to make it official."
Barker initially made an oral commitment to UCLA.
"But I continued to talk to (UH assistant) coach (Lewis) Powell," Barker said. "I really like Coach Powell and (head) coach Norm Chow."
San Diego State, Colorado State, Utah and Utah State also recruited Barker. But he said UH would be a better fit.
"I’m really interested in where the program is going," Barker said. "They’re bringing in a really good class. It will be cool to come in and be part of that. Playing up in Hawaii is definitely going to be cool. I’m excited to go out there and play."
Barker said he once was timed running 40 yards in 4.37 seconds. He said he consistently runs the distance in sub-4.5 seconds.
"I’m trying to gain some more weight," he said. "I want to be about 215 before the season."
Alta ran a spread offense that focused mostly on the passing game. Barker had 61 receptions for 1,201 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season.
Barker also has competed in basketball, track and lacrosse.
Alta coach Bob Stephens was the center at Brigham Young when Chow was the Cougars offensive coordinator.
Barker said he needs to complete a community-service project to become an Eagle Scout.
