Hawaiian Electric Co. invited the media to a ceremony at its new biofuel facility yesterday. The 110-megawatt plant at the Campbell Industrial Park has been in operation since last year. The combustion turbine generating unit runs on 100 percent biodiesel, a liquid fuel made from oil-rich agricultural crops. HECO currently buys its biodiesel from an Iowa company but hopes to switch to local sources eventually.
