It started the season on a bumpy road, but now, Walter Marciel’s team in blue has a certain polish to it.
In fact, these Kailua Surfriders look a bit like Marciel’s previous team, the former powerhouse at Academy of the Pacific.
Kirk Ronolo Jr. had 15 points and eight rebounds, Kekoa Ford had 13 points and Mason Youart added 10 as Kailua stunned Farrington 48-37 in overtime on Tuesday night at the Surfriders’ gym.
Kailua improved to 5-4 in OIA East play (12-6 overall) by relying on a physical, relentless man-to-man defense. Though freshman Noah Auld’s layup attempt in the final seconds of regulation rattled out of the bucket, Kailua blanked the visitors 11-0 in the extra period.
Farrington dropped to 6-3 in league play (8-10 overall).
“This is a huge win for us,” said Marciel, who is in his first season as coach of the Surfriders. “We didn’t play well against Kaiser (last week). We had a hard time getting the ball inside. Tonight, we had to spread the floor. That’s the only way we could beat Farrington.”
The Surfriders have come a long way in just a few weeks. They showed promise in preseason, but losses to smaller teams like ‘Iolani II were setbacks to learn from.
“We’ve improved a lot, mostly by playing together,” Ronolo said. “We’re finishing at the basket and playing more as a team.”
Ronolo provided a stabilizing force for Kailua against Farrington’s beefy interior. He also had three steals as Kailua’s defense suffocated Farrington. The Governors shot just 27 percent from the field (14-for-51), including 2-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. Farrington, which was led by Jacob McEnroe’s 11 points, outrebounded the Surfriders 33-25, hustling for 15 caroms on the offensive glass. But the Govs were unable to sustain a low-post offense. Tyler Liana finished with just five points against Kailua’s posts — Ronolo, Youart and Auld. Mason Semisi, Farrington’s 6-foot-5 junior, was also limited to five points.
Liana had a team-high 12 rebounds and Semisi had seven, but every offensive grab was challenged, and Farrington struggled to get open looks.
“We could’ve played better defense,” Govs coach Allan Silva said. “Their big guy (Ronolo) did really well. We should’ve double-teamed him. He was steady.”
Ford, a quick, left-handed senior guard, has seen the ups and downs at Kailua.
“This means that with a lot of hard work and dedication, we could beat anybody. We all have the same mind-set,” he said.
The lead changed hands five times in the third quarter, with both teams playing at a deliberate pace. Farrington’s full-court pressure led to 11 Kailua turnovers, but for the most part the Surfriders handled the pressure.
Farrington had a 37-33 lead on Isaiah Smith’s three-point play with 4:17 left in regulation, but Youart hit two foul shots and Ford scored in transition on a steal and pass by William Kailimai to tie it at 37. There was no scoring in the final three minutes, though Ronolo beat Semisi off the dribble to nearly win it in the final 10 seconds.
In overtime, Ronolo scored in transition off a pass from Auld and Ford banked in a layup for a 41-37 lead with 2:12 to go.
Farrington shot 0-for-8 in the extra stanza and turned the ball over three times. Kailua, which didn’t have a turnover in OT, shot just
7-for-15 from the free-throw line, but kept extending the lead. After Ford sank a foul shot with 22 seconds remaining, Kailua led 44-37.
