Former Hawaii quarterback Cayman Shutter has accepted an invitation to compete in the Canadian Football League’s combine in Toronto in March.
Shutter has maintained his amateur status by not hiring an agent. He will forfeit the remaining season on his NCAA eligibility when he participates in the combine.
Shutter’s departure will leave the Warriors with five quarterbacks on the 2013 roster: Sean Schroeder, Jeremy Higgins, Taylor Graham, Ikaika Woolsey and Justin Alo.
Downey High (Calif.) quarterback Aaron Zwahlen will sign a letter of intent with the Warriors on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA signing period. Zwahlen told the Star-Advertiser he will go on a church mission this year and will join the Warriors in 2015.
Shutter, a 2009 Punahou graduate, will earn a bachelor’s degree in May. He redshirted that year and would have been eligible to play for the Warriors this coming season.
Shutter said he leaves on good terms with UH coach Norm Chow and the coaching staff.
"It’s time to make the next step in my career," Shutter said. "I’ll always be a fan of Hawaii."
Shutter was born in Saskatchewan. He moved to Hawaii when he was 10 on Jan. 1, 2001 — 1/1/01.
"I kind of grew up going to CFL games," Shutter said. "My grandparents had season tickets and were big boosters of the (Saskatchewan Roughriders) organization. That was part of the family for me."
As a Canadian citizen who has lived at least five years in the country, he is considered a "non import" and eligible for this year’s CFL draft. Non imports may be drafted four years after their high school graduations.
TSN analyst Duane Forde, who is considered the Mel Kiper Jr. of CFL drafts, has been helpful in introducing Shutter to teams.
