Woman in critical condition after motorcycle crash downtown

Two people were injured after they were thrown from a motorcycle downtown late Saturday.

The male operator, 21, and his female passenger, 27, both from Honolulu, were traveling south on Pali Highway when a station wagon crossed into their path from South Kukui Street, police said.

When the biker hit his brakes, both were thrown. The woman was in critical condition.

Driver injured after hitting utility pole

A man in his 20s was taken to the hospital in serious condition after he reportedly drove his car into a utility pole in Kahuku early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred just after midnight along Kamehameha Highway just before the prawn farm, according to Emergency Medical Services. No other details were available.

Police look into hiker’s death

Maui police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old hiker from Colorado who fell 50 feet Saturday while hiking in the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve, Maui fire officials said.

Fire Department personnel from Makawao Station and Kahului Station responded to the incident on the western slopes of Haleakala around 11:30 a.m., officials said.

The victim was reportedly hiking the Waihou Spring trail with three others when he slipped and fell.

Officials said rescue personnel hiked the man out of the reserve, and his injuries later proved to be fatal.

Man drowns off Kauai shore

A 65-year-old New York man drowned off Kauai Saturday afternoon, officials said.

A Kauai County Fire Department news release said police were notified of the possible swimmer in distress at 3:25 p.m.

The man had been swimming off the south end of Lydgate Beach when he apparently got swept out.

Lifeguards from the Lydgate and Kealia beach towers, along with firefighters from the Kapaa Station and a county park ranger responded to the scene. Rescuers found a body floating farther to the south and roughly 25 yards offshore.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was continued by medics en route to Wilcox Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead.

His name is being withheld pending the notification of kin.
