The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life
The Happy Hawaiian Travelers have reinvented the high school reunion. For the past six years, the group, mostly 1964 Punahou School graduates and their spouses, has taken an extended trip to a foreign destination. In 2011 they went on safari to Tanzania in East Africa. In September it was France, where they discovered the Aloha beauty salon in Villefranche-de-Lauragais, just south of Toulouse. The Honolulu residents “spread our aloha spirit to wherever we go,” said Steve Chung, who helps organize the trips. Two of the ladies performed the hula for residents of the tiny hamlet of St. Jean de Paracol, which hosted the group to a French version of a luau, called “meshui,” Chung said. The group’s next adventure will be a cruise in the Canadian Maritime Provinces in the fall.
