Vulcans women dominate Silverswords
After a blistering first half, the Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team cruised to a 64-48 victory over Chaminade in a conference game Monday night at McCabe Gym.
The Vulcans (11-7, 8-4) shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the field in the first half to take a 38-20 advantage into the break. The Silverswords (1-16, 1-11) closed to within 56-44 with just under six minutes left, but didn’t get any closer.
Kamie Imai posted 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Jazlyn Afusia scored 13 to lead Hawaii Hilo.
Chaminade’s Shana Kawakami scored a game-high 14 points.
» In the men’s game between the two schools at McCabe Gym, Chaminade defeated UHH 89-67.
Lee Bailey, Bennie Murray and De’Andre Haskins all had 17 points for the Silverswords (12-8, 9-3), and Haskins grabbed 15 rebounds.
Mychael Hearn scored 15 points with 10 rebounds for the Vulcans (5-15, 3-9).
Helmet Night honors Steinhoff, Manago
Hawaii Pacific will remember two student-athletes who died during the 2010-11 school year between games of Saturday’s basketball doubleheader at Blaisdell Arena.
"Kam’s and Zach’s Helmets Night" honors basketball player Kameron Steinhoff, who died following a skateboarding accident in 2011, and baseball player Zachary Manago, who was killed during an organized bike ride in 2010.
Free bike and skateboard helmets will be given to children on a first-come basis following the 5 p.m. men’s basketball game against Point Loma. The women’s game is at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.

Sea Warriors No. 9 in regional poll
Hawaii Pacific is ranked ninth in the West Region Top 10, which was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Sea Warriors also had three seniors named to the preseason All-West Region’s second team in third baseman Kale Sumner, shortstop Wade Tamaru and pitcher Michael Murray.

Development camp put on by HPU men
Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer coach Chris Fisher, along with players and staff, will hold the HPU Individual Development Camp for players with college aspirations on Feb. 16 and 17.
The camp includes college program training methods, strength and conditioning training and a seminar on college recruiting and admissions.
The camps run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Atherton Field at HPU’s Windward Campus. The camp is $40 for one day or $75 for both.
