Defending champ leads at Pearl Open
Defending champion Jun Won Park carded a sizzling 7-under 65 Friday to take a two-shot lead into today’s second round of the 35th Hawaii Pearl Open at Pearl Country Club.
The round by the Korean Golf Tour pro included eight birdies and one bogey. Hawaii’s TJ Kua and Greg Meyer, Minoru Hatsumi of Japan and Dong Seop Maeng from Korea were two strokes back at 67.
The field will be trimmed to 72 for Sunday’s final round.
Fink second at Amer Ari golf tournament
‘Iolani graduate David Fink, a junior at Oregon State, carded a 3-under 69 to finish at 207 to tie for second as the Amer Ari Invitational golf tournament concluded Friday at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on Hawaii island.
Fink and Washington’s Trevor Simsby finished at 9-under 207, two strokes behind medalist Dominic Bozzelli of Auburn.
UCLA and Washington tied for team honors in the 20-school event at 22-under 842. Host Hawaii Hilo finished 18th at 891 and Hawaii 19th at 902.
Leading the Vulcans was Dalen Yamauchi, who tied for 42nd at 217. Nainoa Calip led the Rainbow Warriors at 222.
Murray preseason pitcher of the year
Hawaii Pacific senior Michael Murray was named the PacWest preseason pitcher of the year and two teammates joined him on the first team as the PacWest announced its preseason all-conference baseball team Friday.
Joining Murray were Sea Warriors senior shortstop Wade Tamaru (Mid-Pacific) and senior catcher Jordan Inamasu (Maui).
HPU was picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll, while Hawaii Hilo was eighth.
California Baptist was the preseason No. 1 and Grand Canyon senior third baseman Derek Mendoza the preseason player of the year.
Augustana edges UHH in baseball
Kye Winter’s run-scoring sacrifice fly to center scored Jake Petersen with what proved to be the winning run as Augustana rallied past Hawaii Hilo 4-3 in Friday’s first game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans (0-1) had taken a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Zachary Hamasaki’s RBI single that scored Keenan Kaluau from third. The Vikings (2-4) tied it in the top of the fifth when Petersen scored on Winter’s double.
