Above, Kalakaua Middle School student Jasmine Santiago, 13, explained her project "Smile! Wait, that's fake!" to Kevin Lye, a judge at the fair. Jasmine was the overall winner at last year's fair. At left, Niu Valley Middle School student Hanamei Shao, 13, stood by her "Homemade Carbon Filter" project. Hanamei took second place in the Junior Research Division.
