Kalani coach Michael Ching has talked for two years about how his team provides at least one special moment per game.
Turns out it takes about 100 of them to be a state champion.
Kalani’s Kazuto Moribe stopped a penalty kick from Punahou’s Delton Oki and the Falcons beat the Buffanblu 3-2 after two overtimes and a penalty-kick shootout on Saturday in the Division I final of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/HHSAA Boys Soccer Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
"Un-freaking-believable," Ching said about Moribe. "To actually be the best player and the PK keeper. I love this team! I love this team!"
Ryan Bui, Steve Teshima and Leo Klink scored goals in the shootout, and Klink had both of Kalani’s goals in regulation.
Punahou declared its intentions from the opening whistle, breaking the plane two minutes in when Ian Matsukawa beat Kalani keeper Michael Stafford from in front of the goal but had the goal waved off because of a handball.
No matter, there was more where that came from.
The Buffanblu earned a free kick in the 16th minute and Matsukawa took it from the top of the box.
Ching screamed frantically trying to direct his defense, but there was nothing he could do about the laser Matsukawa put high into the goal.
But the Buffanblu had to know that the Falcons would respond. Kalani always responds.
Punahou treated Klink like any other striker until he taught the Buffanblu the error of their ways. Scott Manago, easily the most active player on the field, stole a pass at midfield and delivered a pinpoint pass over Klink and the two defenders who were shadowing him, allowing the OIA’s scoring king to sprint past them and toe the ball into the goal just over Punahou keeper Henry Engel’s head.
Klink got more attention after that, but the only attempt he could muster in the first half was a header that bounced off the crossbar. Punahou had its chances as well, the best when Stafford saved an attempt from Matsukawa and earned a hug from Teshima.
Punahou pulled ahead again in the 49th minute when Steven Yoshimoto showed off his leg with a big arcing shot from 30 yards out that just creeped inside the top corner of the goal. Stafford did all he could to punch it out, but he couldn’t rise high enough. He would atone for it with three spectacular saves in the second half.
Klink responded with another goal in the 58th minute, when, after a delay to get an ambulance across the field to attend to a spectator, Moribe put a pass right on Klink’s foot and watched him speed by another Punahou defender and knock home the equalizer.
Ching said the spectator carted off was Klink’s mother, but he wasn’t informed until after the game.
