Electronic threat affects schools, results in arrest
Hawaii County police arrested a 23-year-old Kona man on suspicion of terroristic threatening in an incident that led to the lockdown of four Waimea-area public schools Monday.
Police said a 25-year-old Honokaa woman reported receiving anonymous threatening telephone calls and text messages. Some of the text messages made reference to violent actions at Honokaa School and Waimea Elementary School, police said.
School officials placed Honokaa Elementary, Honokaa High and Intermediate School, Waimea Elementary School and Waimea Middle School on lockdown for about three hours.
The lockdown was lifted at about 1 p.m. after police arrested the suspect on suspicion of terroristic threatening.
Police said their investigation found that the calls were made from a home in Kailua-Kona.
Driver succumbs to her injuries from car crash
A Hakalau woman was fatally injured in a two-car collision in North Kohala on Saturday, Hawaii County police said.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported that Theresa Doris Pacheco, 49, died Saturday night at a hospital from injuries she suffered earlier in the day.
Police said Pacheco was driving south in a sedan when she swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid rear-ending another car. Her car sideswiped the right rear corner of the car, went off the right side of the road and overturned.
The other car’s driver, a 62-year-old Atlanta man, was unhurt.
It was the eighth traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
